Having worked with computers for over twen years, the question I hear most is "Why get a Mac not a PC?".

Apple had a graphical operating system and WYSIWYG software such as a word processor and Adobe photoshop long before Microsoft. That's why many publishing companies still use Macs today.

I've owned PCs and Windows laptops - heck I've even built my own PC. But they wear you down. Crashing, buggy, viruses, malware, reinstall Windows, pop- "You have old icons on your desktop", click Start to Shutdown(?), and horrible desktop boxes with no style.

So, I changed to an iMac. Bliss. Pure bliss. So, I think the question should really be

MaryBeth,

Thanks for the response. You make a great point about grading subjectively. I find that using a grading rubric and providing the student with it prior to submitting their paper does cut down on surprises. It does not eliminate them (because not all students review), but it does reduce it. A well written grading rubric allows the students to know what is expected of them and how to achieve maximum points!

Thanks for your time.

I use rubrics for papers discussions and classwork. I publish them with the assignment and provide a copy with scores and comments for everything I grade. It makes grading more efficient and less susceptible to the inevitable student who will accuse me of grading subjectively.

MACs are good for the creative outlet within the computer world. Graphic programs work great and seemed to be aimed directly for MACs. My work programs and reporting software all seem to hang on MACs. Sadly to say I have a PC at work and constantly working with transferring files back and forth.

Jodee.

Hi and thanks for the posting. What it came down to for me when deciding to buy a Mac was that I was using it for work. The time that I have saved has more than paid for the added cost of the Mac. My Mac "just works" and I love it. I will admit that there are times that I need to look a little more to find certain software, but most of the time I can find what I am looking for. With regards to the iPad, I am working on a blog posting on this topic now. I do have one and I use it daily. For work, I mainly use it to store my textbooks. I have a high speed scanner and I scanned most of my books. I have over 200 textbooks on my iPad. This makes it much easier to travel!

Thanks for your time.
