We discussed some of the basic hardware that you need to get started. All schools require that both students and staff have a basic set of software applications that are integrated effectively into their programs. These applications generally include software for word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, and web browsers. You are expected to have a basic understanding of how to use a computer, which includes:

•Sending and receiving emails
•Sending and receiving file attachments
•Using the Internet

Here are a few of the software requirements:
Microsoft Office
Word
Excel
Outlook
PowerPoint

You need to be able to download and send back assignments to students, and this is what most schools use. Some schools and websites do offer significant discounts to teachers. One of my favorites is gradware.com. You may also consider a free program that you can get at openoffice.org. This allows limited functionally of these programs and you can save them in Microsoft format. I would not recommend this being your primary way to work, but it may be a temporary solution until you can get the software that you do need. You will also need a compatible web browser, such as Firefox, Safari or Internet Explorer. Make sure that you have these starter software programs to assist you in your teaching endeavors.
