Many of us are familiar with a syllabus from our college days. The idea of a syllabus is no different online than on the ground. While the faculty member may have limited control over what changes can be made to the syllabus online, the idea remains the same. A syllabus is simply an outline of course objectives, resources, assignments, etc. for the course. Some schools will not let the faculty member change any areas of the syllabus, while others give the faculty member complete control. No matter the level of control given, there are important key areas that each syllabus should contain. If your school does not allow you to make any changes to your syllabus, you could post any missing information on the announcement board or in a supplemental document for the students. When working on a syllabus, keep in mind that this is the contract between you and the students. You need to ensure that everything is clear and, of course, accurate as the students will refer back their syllabus when they need clarification on the class.
