You found a school that teaches your field of expertise, but they are not hiring at this time. What do you do now? Maybe just check back in a couple months and hope for the best? You could, but from my experience, that’s not the best approach. In fact, I strongly recommend NOT doing that. You need to take advantage of the situation. Even though they are not hiring now, why not contact them and see if they will be in the near future or give them your information? What is the worst that they are going to do, tell you no? I have heard no more times than I can remember in my life.
You should find the human resources page on the school website. Then send an inquiry email to the human resources director. You will be looking for something like hr@school.edu. Many schools have databases of potential candidates that they draw from and may not even have to advertise for open positions. One thing you will learn about online education, is when schools are hiring, they want positions filled quickly.

Remember, because the school is not hiring does not mean that you should not contact them. During my job search, I emailed a school that was not hiring and I received a response from the hiring manager that they just had a position open up and that she would forward my resume to the department dean. I got a job at that school and have been working there since 2005. While this may not happen to you, it does show that being proactive does pay off! Look at it this way: I have worked for that school since 2005 and in that time I have made $150k and had steady employment with them. Does that extra step, seem worth it now?
In the Resource Center website for my book, I provided you with many different sample letters that you could send. One thing you can do, which I’ve done in the past, is when you’re searching, make a list of schools that are not hiring and then you can send one mass email to all of the schools at once. If you’re going to do this, you need to make sure that you blind copy everybody so they can’t see that you’re sending such a large email to everyone else. You want to keep track of this on the spreadsheet you created and then follow up at the appropriate time. Within the next day or two, or sometimes weeks, you may get responses from some of these messages. Make sure you read them carefully and update them in your spreadsheet. It would be very embarrassing if you sent a follow-up email in 30 to 60 days to someone who told you that their school no longer teaches your area of expertise. Keep everything updated in the spreadsheet and check your email frequently.
