It is important to understand that it does take time to find the right position that will connect with your professional experience, teaching style, and education. There are hundreds and thousands of schools and universities that are offering online courses. Some of these schools are solely online, while others are converting and adding online or hybrid classes. As I noted earlier, most of the positions, if not all, you will be looking for will be part-time adjunct positions.

The million-dollar question then becomes, “how do I find the right position?” or “how do I find a position at all?” I have provided you with a list of online schools to help get you started. You can find this in the Resource Center website for this book. At the time of this writing, that list had over 800 schools that offer online classes. This is a document that I have been working on since I started my initial job search. If you get one thing from this book, it is the school list. That list alone is priceless and will give you a head start on your job search. There are so many online resources that can help you find your ideal job. When looking for an online teaching job, I was always quite frustrated by the lack of quality job sites for online teachers, so what did I do? I made one myself! On my website www.howtoteachonline.com/online-teaching-jobs I have a job list that you can review and you can subscribe to alerts when there are new postings. I only wish that there had been a site like this when I first started teaching online. It would have saved me hours of searching. I also have a list of other sites that list online teaching jobs, although all of those are on my list as well. But if you want to check these sites out on your own, here is a list of some of the top sites (aside from mine):

I strongly suggest that you do take the time to visit my site as I have cut out all of the hard work for you. When I first started looking for online work, I began making my own list of schools that taught my subject online and created my own spreadsheet. I did many Google searches and a lot of the legwork, which you should not have to do. My approach was simple in theory; I was going to contact every school that taught criminal justice online to see if they were hiring. If they where, I would apply. If they were not hiring, I would contact the human resources department and submit an inquiry letter. My theory was that there was strength in numbers and that if that I submitted more applications, my odds of finding a job would increase. And they did. I spent several months compiling my list of schools that taught online and I hope to reduce some of that work for you to allow you to focus on the real task at hand, which is finding a job.

Keep in mind, looking for an online teaching job is a unique process and probably unlike anything you have ever done before. You will be sending out a lot of e-mails and it’s important to follow up on those as well. You will be completing many applications, but I can assure you that the time spent searching for the job will be well worth it once you start teaching at that school.
